Petronet LNG is a joint venture backed by major Indian public sector undertakings including Oil & Natural Gas Corporation, Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) and GAIL (India).

The project will be executed by L&T Onshore on a lump sum turnkey basis. It also includes the establishment of facilities for ethane and propane handling and dispatch to support an associated propane dehydrogenation and polypropylene plant.

Larsen & Toubro senior vice-president and L&T Onshore head E S Sathyanarayanan said: “Securing this prestigious order from Petronet LNG is a strong endorsement of our proven expertise in executing complex EPCC projects. We are fully committed to completing this project safely, efficiently and within the agreed timelines, while upholding the highest levels of quality.”

The venture is part of India’s inaugural petrochemical complex, which integrates cold energy utilisation from an LNG terminal.

It aims to help bridge the domestic polypropylene demand-supply gap while supporting the Indian Government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative by boosting local petrochemical manufacturing capabilities.

Larsen & Toubro deputy managing director and president Subramanian Sarma said: “This order is a significant milestone for us as we contribute to India’s first integrated petrochemical complex leveraging LNG cold energy. It aligns with the nation’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision and strengthens indigenous petrochemical capacity.”

Last month, L&T Onshore won a contract from BPCL in the range of Rs5bn–Rs10bn.

The project involves EPCC of a linear low-density polyethylene and high-density polyethylene (LLDPE/HDPE) swing unit.

This unit will consist of two production lines, each with a capacity of 575,000 per annum, located in Bina in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

Set to be carried out on a lump sum turnkey basis, the project will establish the largest LLDPE/HDPE swing unit in India, marking a new standard in polyethylene production capacity.
