Singapore-based power player Sembcorp has completed the construction of the 250MW SECI 1 wind project in Tamil Nadu, the southern state in India.

The work was completed by Sembcorp’s Indian subsidiary Sembcorp Energy India Limited (SEIL). The project was awarded by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) on behalf of India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in April last year. The wind power plant is claimed to have been completed ahead of schedule.
This SECI 1 project is considered to be the first delivery of installed capacity awarded under the country’s nationwide wind power tenders.
Located in Chandragiri in Tamil Nadu, the wind farm consists of 119 units of 2.1MW S111-120m wind turbine generators. Sembcorp Green Infra, a subsidiary of SEIL had won the project in the first round of wind tenders SECI.
The green electricity generated from this wind project will be supplied to the states of Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, under a long term power purchase agreement (PPA) between SEIL and Power Trading Corporation.
This wind farm generates enough electricity to be supplied to more than 216,000 Indian households without adding 700,000 tonnes of CO2 emission per year.

Recently, Sembcorp signed a PPA with Facebook to supply 50MW of clean energy through offsite solar panels. These panels will be installed on up to 900 rooftops in Singapore, between this year and 2020.
