Italian cable supplier Prysmian Group has secured a €17m contract from New Brunswick Power (NB Power) to supply new submarine cable system.

Prysmian has won the contract for the Fundy Isles project that involves the development of a new submarine cable link. The link will connect Deer Island, Campobello Island and Grand Manan Island to the mainland power grid in the Canadian province.
The link will allow the upgrade the capacity of the existing submarine transmission system in the Passamaquoddy Region of the Bay of Fundy.
Under the contract, Prysmian will be responsible for the design, manufacture and installation of a 300mm² 69kV three-core submarine cable system with XLPE insulation for a total of 20km. All the submarine core cables will be produced at Prysmian’s centre in Montereau, France and the cable armouring will be manufactured at the company’s Nordenham facility in Germany.
The project is expected to be completed by this October.
Prysmian Group submarine business director Raul Gil said: “This project is particularly challenging for Prysmian as the section where the installation activities will be performed presents the highest tides in the world, with very strong currents. Moreover, the submarine route crosses an extensive fishing area and this limits the time window that can be used for installation operations.
“Thanks to our technological and state-of-the-art products and solutions, we will ensure the safe and reliable energy supply to the communities of the area.”
The first cable will run for about 3.5km from the Cable Riser Station at Chocolate Cove, on the east side of Deer Island, to a Cable Riser Station at Wilson’s Beach, on the west side of Campobello Island in Canada.
The second cable will run for about 16.5km from the Cable Riser Station at Little Whale Cove, on the east side of Campobello Island to a Cable Riser Station at Long Eddy Point, on the north side of Grand Manan Island.
Earlier this month, Prysmian secured a contract to upgrade the power transmission grid in Washington DC. As part of the $190m, the company will supply 340km of High Voltage cables and systems along with its new Pry-Cam grid monitoring technology and maintenance services.
