Chinese oil and gas major PetroChina Guangdong has selected Honeywell UOP, a supplier and licensor of process technology, for its integrated petrochemical complex in the country.

The state-owned company will deploy heavy oil processing technology from Honeywell UOP for the petrochemical complex. The new complex will help PetroChina Guangdong to transform into a fully integrated petrochemicals supplier.

Honeywell UOP petrochemicals & refining technologies vice president and general manager Bryan Glover said: “This is the most economically sound solution for the scale and complexity of PetroChina’s operations.

“Our technologies will enable PetroChina Guangdong to produce aromatics on a large scale because of its ability to integrate refining operations with a full aromatics complex. We are working to make it one of the most efficient plants in the world.”

Features of the petrochemical complex

The petrochemical complex will include a 3.7 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) Unicracking hydrocracking unit which would convert intense vacuum gas oil into the raw materials for petrochemicals and motor fuels.

It will also include two Honeywell UOP CCR Platforming units, with a capacity of 3.0 mtpa each, to produce aromatics and fuels, and hydrogen that are important for other processes in the plant.

Besides, the new petrochemical complex will have a 2.6 mpta Light Desorbent Parex aromatics complex to produce high-purity paraxylene, the primary component of many plastic resins, fibers and films. The aromatics block would include the UOP Sulfolane, Tatorayand Isomar processes and a UOP Olefin Removal Process unit to ensure optimum performance of the Parex process.

In July this year, Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company (KIPIC) had selected Honeywell for expansion of Al-Zour refinery and petrochemicals sections with Honeywell UOP technology.

The contract was awarded to supply technology licenses, design services, key equipment, advanced catalysts and adsorbents for the production of clean-burning fuels, paraxylene, propylene and other petrochemicals.
