South-western China’s Yunnan province is to invest US$447m in several hydroelectric power projects this year, according to the Interfax news agency.
These projects will add at least 1.5 million kWh of generating capacity this year. Officials in Yunnan envisage that hydroelectric power can replace biomass fuels that are commonly used in the province’s rural areas and that cause air pollution.
