Younicos will work with the project’s prime contractor Doosan GridTech to install the storage system, which will offer multiple energy storage services to the city of Austin, Texas.
The system will be installed by using Younicos’ Y.Cube systems, and will be monitored by the firm’s Y.Q software platform that will communicate with the Doosan GridTech Intelligent Controller using the modular energy storage architecture (MESA) open standard.
The battery system will be installed in a neighborhood in East Austin, which is surrounded by both residential and commercial buildings.
Austin Energy had initiated a sustainable and holistic integration of energy storage and solar PV (SHINES) project in 2016 through securing $4.3m grant from the US Department of Energy’s SunShot Initiative.
The multi-year project will incorporate 4MW of solar PV, 4MW of distributed energy storage, smart inverters, forecasting tools, market signals, advanced communications and a software optimization platform
According to Younicos, the seven Y.Cubes and Y.Converters represent the firm’s largest Y.Cube deployment in the US.
The Y.Cube systems will offer storage capabilities under distributed energy resource management system (DERMS), which will maintain grid reliability and enables to deliver energy loads at the lowest possible cost.
Designed for commercial and industrial battery storage applications, the Y.Cube is a plug-and-play system that also features various thermal management subsystems for more safety.
Doosan’s DG-DERO platform will use various advanced control methodologies that will be demonstrated and assessed using a fleet of diverse DER assets deployed at various locations among Austin Energy’s customers.
