Located at Damaracherla in Nalgonda district, the Yadadri thermal power station owned by state utility Telangana State Power Generation (TSGENCO) will comprise five units, each of 800MW and equipped with super critical technology.
The first four units of the thermal power plant had previously got a financing support of INR169.5bn ($2.65bn) from the Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) as per a report in Times of India.
Having broken ground in June 2015, the Yadadri thermal power project is expected to have its first two units operational in the next couple of years.
TSGenco CMD D. Prabhakar Rao was quoted by the publication as saying: “The Yadadri thermal project is one of the two major projects planned by the Telangana Genco to make the state selfsufficient in power generation. I am confident that Telangana will become a power surplus state soon.”
The 4,000MW Yadadri coal-fired power plant is expected to play a crucial role for irrigation projects in Telangana while ensuring uninterrupted supply of power to the agricultural sector. It is also anticipated to boost the electricity generation capacity in the state based on future requirements.
In July 2015, TSGENCO had awarded an INR179.5bn ($2.81bn) contract to build the Yadadri supercritical thermal power project to the central government-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL).
It has been reported in the Indian media that TSGENCO has requested BHEL to provide low emission and less polluting devices for the Yadadri thermal plant to address environmental concerns. The devices asked by the utility include flue-gas desulfurization (FGD) and electrostatic precipitators.
