Xstrata Coal Queensland chief operating officer Reinhold Schmidt said the Land Court’s recommendation acknowledges the company has followed a thorough and rigorous environmental assessment and review process throughout the development of the project.
The 32,000ha Wandoan Coal Project envisages a proposed 22 million tons saleable thermal coal operation, and includes the development of associated infrastructure.
As part of the ongoing feasibility process for the project, the operator Xstrata Coal with a 75% stake and partners Itochu and Sumitomo with 12.5% each are investigating options for the project’s development including adding an additional partner into the project.
Xstrata stated it will move towards a final investment decision and continue planning for construction of the mine and supporting infrastructure following final approvals from the Queensland Government.
