London-based marine energy developer MeyGen has retained the services of Xodus to offer further environmental support for the project. The contract for Phase 1 of the project was initially secured in March 2011. It is now valued at £450,000.
In July 2012, MeyGen submitted the project’s Environmental Statement (ES) to Marine Scotland and the Highland Council for the offshore marine license application and onshore planning application. The approvals are expected in April 2013.
The ES was prepared in partnership with other consultants including investment bank Morgan Stanley, independent power generator International Power and technology provider Atlantis Resources Corporation.
Phase one of the tidal energy project will have 86 1MW tidal turbines installed 1.1km2 of the Inner Sound of the Pentland Firth between Caithness on the Scottish mainland and the Island of Stroma.
After phase two, the MeyGen project is projected to carry a total of 400, 1MW turbines located across 3.5km2, with a capacity to power 400,000 homes.
