The second largest hydroelectric project in China – the 13.86GW Xiluodu project – begun initial operations this week following a successful three day test run.

In a statement, project operator China Three Gorges Corporation said the project’s Unit 13 began supplying electricity to China’s Southern Grid on 15 July.

Located on the Jinsha River, construction work on the project began back in 2005. All of the project’s 18 units are expected to be operational in 2015.
