Construction of Wuskwatim dam in northern Manitoba, Canada, has cleared one of its final hurdles having passed an environmental impact assessment.
A study report by Fisheries Canada and Transport Canada has concluded that the 200MW dam on the Burntwood river – Manitoba’s largest planned construction project – is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.
The study of the US$760M structure took into account mitigative measures Manitoba Hydro plans to install to compensate for fish habitat loss when 37ha of land is flooded as part of the project.
