Western Power Distribution (WPD) has deployed Tollgrade Communications' LightHouse Platform in the UK, for grid modernization project.

The deployment includes a new 50 hertz version of Tollgrade’s LightHouse distribution line sensors.

WPD is one of six electricity distribution network operators in the UK responsible for the Midlands, South Wales, and the South West regions.

The distribution network operator delivers electricity to over 7.7 million customers over a 55,300km² service area and its network consists of 216,000km of overhead lines and underground cables, and 184,000 substations.

Tollgrade’s LightHouse platform will provide WPD with real-time visibility into its distribution grid to improve its services and optimize network planning.

WPD innovation and low carbon networks engineer Ben Godfrey said, "We selected Tollgrade’s LightHouse platform because it provides us with better information for network planning, which will help us improve grid reliability and enable the transition to a lowcarbon future."

Previously, Tollgrade partnered with the UK-based smart grid equipment supplier, Powerline Technologies, to provide the LightHouse platform to WPD as a part of Project FALCON.
