Wood Group GTS has been awarded a contract by National Grid to provide gas turbine icon governor control system upgrades to nine Rolls-Royce Avon gas turbines including an additional governor to act as a rotational spare.

Under the $3.2m contract, Wood Group will provide system upgrades which will be integrated to gas turbines operating at compressor stations located in Cambridge, Diss, Chelmsford and Huntingdon in the UK.

Designed to regulate fuel flow into the gas turbine, the icon governor control system provides stable operation across the turbine performance range from no load to full load conditions.

National Grid John Surtees said that the National Grid operates with the highest standards and stringent quality and safety management systems.

Wood Group GTS president Frank Avery said the company is able to meet National Grid’s requirement to use local resources with controls system engineers based in the UK.

The upgrade will meet address equipment obsolescence while allowing the continued operation of all four compressor stations
Additionally, the upgrades will provide increased flexibility to ensure the essential flow of natural gas across the UK network.
