Wirsol Energy and Renew Estate have announced a partnership to develop a pipeline of over 1 GW of solar power projects in Australia.

The deal follows a move by Germany-based Wirsol in March this year to acquire three new large-scale solar farms in Queensland and Victoria states with a combined generating capacity of 198 MW.

Wirsol and Australia-based Renew Estate say they will develop over 1 GW of solar PV projects in the fast-growing Manly renewables tech hub known as Solar Beach. Over 400 MW of projects are already underway, with construction slated to start in early 2018, Wirsol said.

The pipeline will include storage-ready projects, it added. Simon Currie, Global Head of Energy at Norton Rose Fulbright, which will support Renew Estate, commented: “Dramatic falls in the cost of solar and wind energy and storage technologies mean we can now plan for a zero carbon future with affordable, reliable and sustainable energy.

“This is an innovative partnership which will deliver future-ready projects incorporating storage and enhancing the reliability of the system.”

The two partners said they are also looking further afield in the wider Asia-Pacific region for project development opportunities.
