The ratio of wind power to UK’s overall energy mix also rose during the year to 5.5% when compared to 4% in 2011.
Increase in wind power output was attributed to the extra capacity provided by new offshore and onshore wind farms going operational in the country.
Trade body RenewableUK welcomed the report with Deputy Chief Executive Maf Smith saying that the figure continue to get better each year.
"Wind energy now has the capacity to power more than four and a half million British homes with clean electricity, saving more than six and a half million tonnes of carbon emissions every year," noted Smith.
Continued support from the government could further increase the sector’s share to 20% of the country’s energy mix by 2020, opined Smith.
