WH Smith, the UK highstreet retailer, has announced plans to open up to 50 new stores in motorway service areas. WH Smith said the agreement with Moto would see the opening of 48 stores and a further two stores at Extra-branded sites owned by Swayfield.

The decision will help grow the company’s travel arm, which currently has 203 units in air and rail sites. The move comes after WH Smith trialled two stores at Moto’s busiest sites in Birch West on the M62 and Leigh Delamere on the M4.

Tim Moss, Moto’s chief executive said: We are looking forward to rolling out WH Smith stores across the entire estate. This is a natural step for Moto in providing the widest and best choice of familiar high street brands to our customers.
