Awarded by the Empresa Nacional de Residuos Radiactivos (ENRESA), the Spanish agency responsible for radioactive waste management and nuclear plant decommissioning, the contract covers segmentation of Zorita’s reactor vessel head (RVH) and reactor vessel (RV), including the up-front engineering studies.
Additional responsibilities include design of the RVH/RV detachment, manipulation and lifting to the spent fuel pool where mechanical cutting of the components will be carried out.
Westinghouse will serve as the prime contractor for the project, with Monlain and VSL as the main subcontractors.
Operated by Gas Natural Fenosa, the 142MWe Westinghouse pressurized water reactor (PWR), Zorita reactor was closed in April 2006 on ministerial order, following 38 years of operation.
Gas Natural Fenosa then transferred the plant’s ownership to ENRESA in February 2010.
Having commenced in June 2013, the dismantling project is anticipated to take approximately two years for completion.
