BHP Billiton is considering transporting yellowcake from the Yeelirrie mine through Kalgoorlie before moving it interstate.
“The aim is to have a report that will address transport through wherever it happens to be within the municipality of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and what steps need to be taken if there are any issues that arise when anything’s being transported,” Esther said.
Helen Caldicott, head of Nuclear Policy Research Institute, had also met councillors on July 27, 2009.
Caldicott has urged the councillors to reject any plans involving uranium passing within the Kalgoorlie-Boulder municipality.
“When uranium is transported in 44-gallon drums through Kalgoorlie, there’ll inevitably be accidents,” Caldicott said.
“The 44-gallon drums will be emitting gamma radiation all the time like X-rays, so people who handle it, the workers, will be exposed to gamma radiation, whole bodies like X-rays.”
