The first community hydroelectric scheme to be developed in Wales, UK, has been opened at Talybont on the River Usk. The £90,000 (US$167,000) project, which took more than four years to complete, is expected to generate an annual revenue of some £17,000 (US$31,600).

Community company Talybont on Usk Energy Ltd was created to develop the project which negotiated a 15-year lease on a turbine house. The 36kW Valley Hydro crossflow turbine uses existing pipework. Anticipated annual output is 240MWh.
