The plans are underway to file an application with Public Commission of Wisconsin (PSCW) for its approval to proceed with modification and complete the process by 2015 or 2016.
We Energies chairman, president and chief executive officer Gale Klappa said that the proposed conversion of fuel source will bring down the company’s operating costs and improve the overall environmental performance of the plant.
"For decades, the Valley plant has served a critical role – producing electricity, providing voltage support for the downtown Milwaukee business center, and delivering a reliable steam supply for some 450 customers, ranging from Northwestern Mutual to the Marquette University campus," Klappa added.
The 280MW power station will retain the capacity after being able to burn natural gas instead of coal and continue its power supply to grid and steam to hundreds of buildings in downtown Milwaukee.
We Energies has recently received a Certificate of Authority from the PSCW to upgrade its existing natural gas main, which it expects to complete by 2014.
