Operated by Cambi on behalf of the waste-to-energy agency EGE and the city of Oslo, the plant will convert household food waste into enough liquid biogas to run 135 buses in the city.

Located in Nes, Romerike, an agricultural region close to Oslo, the plant is expected to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by some 10,000 tons a year, lower particle emissions and reduce noise levels.

Once operational, it will treat 50,000 tons of food waste annually and produce around 14,000 normal cubic meters a day of biomethane; and the liquefied biogas can be efficiently transported for use as fuel.

The plant design features conventional components in a mixed refrigeration process that is scalable upwards to a capacity of at least 60 tons/day.

EGE director communications and CSR Jannicke Bjerkas said this plant will enable 135 region buses to run on biogas.

"The air will be cleaner and noise levels will be reduced, and these are benefits that everyone in the region will enjoy," added Bjerkas.

Wartsila Oil & Gas Systems managing director Tore Lunde said the company will be involved in the project to produce a new, renewable, and environmentally sustainable transportation fuel.

"There is huge potential for the use of LBG from renewable energy sources as fuel for trucks and buses, and this project is an important step forward in developing this market.

"This same technology can also be used in small liquefaction projects with other sources of gas as well, and we are excited about the future possibilities," added Lunde.
