Voith Siemens Hydro and American Municipal Power-Ohio have signed a contract for the supply of mechanical, electrical, automation and balance of plant equipment to a hydroelectric project that will add more than 208MW to existing dams on the Ohio River, in the US. These new generation facilities are slated to go online in 2012.

American Municipal Power (AMP) Ohio’s president and CEO, Marc Gerken, has said that the organization will develop three run-of-the-river hydroelectric plants at existing dams on the Ohio River.

The locks-and-dam sites are situated at Willow Island near Waverly, West Virginia; Cannelton near Cannelton, Indiana; and Smithland in Livingston County, Kentucky. Combined, these three projects have an expected capacity of 208MW.

Mark Garner, president and CEO of Voith Siemens Hydro, said: Voith Siemens Hydro is thrilled to be part of this exciting development of renewable energy in the US. The order value will exceed $300 million. Having secured this contract, we will manufacture many of the turbine components in York, Pennsylvania, and may consider the possibility of opening a new Ohio manufacturing plant contingent upon appropriate state incentives.
