Modernisation work at the 536MW run-of-the-river Conowingo hydro power station in Maryland, US has been awarded to Voith Siemens Hydro Power Generation.

The contract is to include modernisation work on four Francis units and dissolved oxygen turbine technology for improving the quality of water.

Work on the plant, operated by Exelon Corporation subsidiary Susquehanna Electric Company, is currently in progress and is expected to be completed in around four years. The value of the contract has not been disclosed.

Located on the Susquehanna river, Conowingo has a total of 11 units and on average generates some 1.6BkWh of electricity per year.

The work follows modernisation of Conowingo’s seven other units which were earlier fitted with conventional runners.
