The first of the two plants is expected to start commercial operations in 2020.
Both the plants will be located in the central coastal province of Ninh Thuan.
According to a recent report, the Vietnam government said commercial nuclear power was a necessary option for the country given the fast-growing demand for electricity in the country. The report said that power demand may rise about 13% in 2009.
The government forecasts that nuclear power generation will be able to meet up to 20% of commercial power demand in 2050.
