The Ministry of Industry of Vietnam has submitted a feasibility study for the Huoi Quang hydroelectric power plant in the northern province of Lai Chau.

If approved by the government, the 520MW project would be developed at an estimated cost of US$500M. Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) is expected to develop what will become the nation’s fourth largest hydro project and will contribute some 15% of the capital costs. Construction of the power plant is expected to kick off later this year and will be put into operation in the 2011-2012 period.

It is projected that 980 households with nearly 6500 people will have to be relocated and the total compensation provided will amount to around US$31.5M.
