The Ministry of Industry of Vietnam has submitted a feasibility study for the Huoi Quang hydro-electric power plant in the northern province of Lai Chau.

If approved by the government, the 520 MW project would be developed at an estimated cost of $500 million. Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) is expected to develop what will become the nation’s fourth largest hydro project and will contribute some 15% of the capital costs. Construction of the power plant is expected to kick off later this year and will be put into operation in the 2011-2012 period.

It is projected that 980 households with nearly 6,500 people will have to be relocated and the total compensation provided will amount to around $31.5 million.
