Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas has received an order for a total of 94 units of the V90 1.8 and 2.0MW turbine for several projects in different provinces in Spain. The wind power plants will produce a total of approximately 560,000MWh per annum, saving from 321,200 tons of carbon dioxide every year.

The order was placed by renewable energy company NEO Energia, part of the EDP Group, and comprises supply, installation and commissioning, as well as a five-year service and maintenance agreement. The order also includes a VestasOnline Business SCADA solution, Vestas said.

Vestas commented that this new contract will strengthen the position of the company’s V90 wind turbine on the Spanish market, and will also support the decisions taken regarding the establishment of new production facilities in Spain.

According to Vestas, the V90 already has a considerable presence in Spain. In 2006, the company inaugurated a nacelle factory in Villadangos del Paramo in Castilla y Leon, which solely produces V90 nacelles for Spain and southern Europe. Then, in February 2007, Vestas announced the construction of a blade factory in Daimiel, in Castilla-La Mancha.

In a press release, NEO Energia’s CEO, Dionisio Fernandez, emphasized how important the Vestas contract will be in achieving the company’s goal of installing 4,200MW in Europe by 2010.

Delivery of the turbines is scheduled to start in July 2008, and the last project is expected to be completed in August 2009.
