Green Mountain Power has received approval from the Vermont Public Service Board to build a 63MW wind energy project in the US state of Vermont.

The Kingdom Community Wind project on Lowell Mountain will consist of 21 turbines and is expected to generate enough electricity to power more than 20,000 homes.

Green Mountain Power and Vermont Electric Cooperative are working together on the project, which is expected to cost approximately $150m.

Construction of the wind farm is expected to be completed by December 2012.

Green Mountain Power president and CEO Mary Powell said this project will bring economic benefits to electric consumers, as well as to the northeast region of Vermont.
