The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has extended the operating license of the Exelon Generation-operated 2,500MW Braidwood generating station located in Illinois, US.
Located in Braceville, Illinois about 20 miles southwest of Joliet, the Braidwood power plant features two pressurized-water reactors.
The 20-year license renewal will enable Exelon to extend the operational life of the Braidwood power plant until 2046 for unit 1and 2047 for unit 2.
Braidwood Station site vice-president Marri Marchionda-Palmer said: "In addition to the vast economic impact, it also allows us to continue producing safe, reliable, carbon-free electricity for the state of Illinois for decades to come."
The Braidwood generating station is designed to generate electricity required to power more than two million homes.
Braidwood mayor James Vehrs said: "Our long-term relationship with Exelon and Braidwood Generating Station has been a large part of the economic and social growth of our city.
"Exelon has promoted job growth, neighborhood stability and a steady influx of tax dollars to our schools and other taxpayer-funded services."
In 2015, the NRC has extended the operating license of the Sequoyah nuclear power plant located in Soddy-Daisy, Tennessee.
The new licenses will conclude on 17 September 2040 for Unit 1 and 15 September 2041 for the Unit 2.
