The approval will see the generating capacity of Units 1 and 2 increase by 1.7% each.
NRC approved the request after its staff carefully evaluated and determined that Duke Energy could safely increase the output of the reactors, mainly through more accurate means of measuring feedwater flow.
In addition, NRC staff reviewed the company’s analysis showing the plant’s design can accommodate the increased power level.
The safety evaluation of the plant’s proposed power increase focused on several areas, including the nuclear steam supply systems, instrumentation and control systems, electrical systems, accident evaluations, radiological consequences, fire protection, operations and training, testing, and technical specification changes.
Duke is planning to increase the output during the scheduled refueling outage of the units 2014.
