The fuel is a blend of conventional gasoline-based fuel and bio-fuel made of algae oil and waste cooking oil.

Commander of the Carrier Strike Group 11 Rear Admiral Peter Gumataotao commented that the Navy has been eager to test bio-fuel to test the efficiency of its engines and aircraft.

"If the biofuel works it can potentially increase our legs in combat maneuverability in terms of our ability to fly longer and sail further," added Gumataotao.

US Navy is expected to use the 50-50 bio-fuel blend to fuel aircraft and other naval surface ships with the aim of reducing US dependence on foreign oil.

"It’s more than biofuel when you talk about energy efficiency," concluded Gumataotao.
