With this deployment of synchrophasors, the grid operator and its transmission owners have reached two milestones in implementing US Energy Department’s goal of revitalizing the country’s electric grid through smart grid technology.
The 161 synchrophasor measurement devices are currently operating along the 50,000-mile interconnected system in the MISO 11-state region, according to elp.com.
Voltage and current at a given location could be measured over 30 times per second with Synchrophasors, while the current technology records measurements every two seconds.
The synchrophasor data would be available to MISO’s real-time system operators in April 2013, the grid operator anticipates.
