The proposed hybrid projects leverage the infrastructure of fossil fuel plants such as the turbine and transmission systems, to lower the cost of solar-generated electricity.

According to the energy department the US currently has a potential to develop 11GW to 21GW CSP projects across the country.

The resultant electricity could potentially power 3 to 6 million homes.

The DoE will selected two to four projects which will then work to design, build, and test cost-competitive integrated CSP-fossil fuel power generating systems.
