A grant of nearly US$2M is to be used to reinforce and strengthen the Jeffries hydroelectric dam near Moncks Corner in Columbia, US, reports ABC News.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the 23m high structure was damaged by 3m waves and 75Mph (120Kph) winds caused by Hurricane Gaston in August 2004.

The federal grant will pay for 75% of the repairs, with state and local governments providing the rest, says the ABC News report.
