Itron has announced that its advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) solution has been selected by Public Utilities Department of the US city of San Diego.

Using AMI technology, the city could streamline meter reading and enhance customer service, thus enabling instant access to water usage data of consumers.

Itron solution will provide remote meter reading capabilities, which may enable San Diego to cut down operating costs, improve safety for employees, and respond to customer needs

Slated to begin in early 2013, the AMI solution installation is expected to be complete within eight months.

Itron North America Water sales, marketing and delivery VP Paula Billingham commented, "With the help of our water AMI solution, the City of San Diego will be able to minimize water loss from unknown leaks and maximize water distribution and operational efficiency."

San Diego compliance and metering manager Dave Akin said: "Itron’s water AMI solution will give San Diego the ability to enhance our water meter reading, customer service and billing capabilities for the 11,000 high impact service locations included in this initial implementation."
