Ukraine’s nuclear utility Energoatom on 18 August signed a contract with European uranium enrichment company Urenco for the supply of material to be used to produce nuclear fuel for Ukraine's NPPs at Westinghouse's fabrication facility at Västerås, Sweden. Urenco is owned by Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. Energoatom president Yuriy Nedashkovskyi said contract was part of the company's efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s energy security. "We have signed a contract to supply enriched uranium for Ukraine's NPPs. In the next three years, this product will be supplied to a Westinghouse plant in Sweden, where fuel assemblies for our NPPs are produced," he said. He noted that the contract envisages a guaranteed supply of two batches of enriched uranium every year and, optionally, two additional supplies a year. Currently Westinghouse supplies fuel for only a small part of Ukraine’s nuclear fleet. Most fuel is supplied by Russia, where the uranium is also enriched.
