The firm will construct an 18m deep and 15m diameter underground tank beneath Grange town’s Memorial Playing Fields.
The tank will stop sewers overflowing during heavy rains and is expected to take a year to be completed.
The firm will also build a smaller tank and replacement of pumps to reduce overflows on the channel’s southern bank in Arnside, with work to commence in next year.
United Utilities Paul Romanko project manager that the work was part of the firm’s multi-billion pound investment programme for the North West.
