The UK payments association APACS has told a trade journal that oil company Shell's decision to suspend operation of the Chip and PIN payment verification system could be a 'boon for criminals'.

Speaking to CardLine Europe, an APACS spokesperson said that Shell’s move to return to signature verification until the security of Chip and PIN is assured amounted to fraudster heaven.

They’ve made a very public statement now that they don’t have chip-and-PIN protection, the spokesperson told CardLine Europe. I can certainly understand what they’ve done; I would have hoped that they’d be less public about it.
