Government statistics report that renewable electricity capacity increased by 42.4% to 14.2GW as a result of the recent conversion of the Tilbury B power station into a biomass plant and the setting-up of new large-scale wind farms, both onshore and offshore, have resulted in an enhanced capacity.
As per present statistics, 9.6% of the total electricity generated in the UK in 2012 is from renewable sources, compared to 9% in 2011.
However, hydroelectric production decreased by 31% while production from onshore wind farms fell by 11%; although offshore wind farms produced 47% higher electricity year-on-year totalling 1.64TWh.
Bioenergy production increased by 6.5% and Solar PV energy, wave and tidal systems increased 9 times.
