The UK government has become the first member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to produce a booklet which promotes the organisation’s guidelines for multinational enterprises.
The booklet will be sent to business leaders and non-governmental organisations to raise awareness of the OECD guidelines and encourage their use amongst UK investors abroad and in the UK.
The OECD guidelines were first issued in 1976 and have been periodically reviewed; the latest was launched in 1998 as part of a regular updating process to reflect changing social, economic and political conditions and to achieve more effective implementation and wider dissemination.
The guidelines represent a voluntary framework of principles of good conduct for international companies, which are designed to help ensure that multinational enterprises co-operate with the policies of countries in which they operate and respect societal expectations.
The guidelines aim to promote and develop a sustainable approach to business conduct, and create an atmosphere of confidence and predictability between business, labour, governments and society as a whole.
