UK Power Networks, which delivers power supplies to London, the East of England and the South East, is replacing two 132,000-volt underground cable circuits and an overhead line in the Byfleet recreation ground area. This will reinforce the network to cater for existing and future demand.
Preliminary work will start on site this month, with the project due to be completed by the end of October. Electricity supplies will not be affected by the project.
David Reid, a project manager at UK Power Networks, said: "This scheme represents a major investment in maintaining and improving the energy infrastructure for Guildford and the wider surrounding area for the future.
"We are determined to provide a reliable supply of electricity and this project is part of our commitment."
Project managers have designed the work to minimise the effect on customers. The only road to be dug up will be a private one in the industrial estate off Canada Road.
A new 3.7km underground route for the cables will be drilled from a network connection point off Murrays Lane, under the Wey Canal, the M25, bordering the recreation ground, Parvis Road, the edge of the cricket ground, under the rail track and up to Byfleet Industrial Estate.
