UK-based civil engineering company Costain has been selected by the country’s environment and climate change department (DECC) to develop carbon capture and storage technologies under a £20m program.
UK Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Edward Davey had recently termed CCS to be a huge opportunity for the country’s research industry.
"Through the projects we have selected, pioneering companies and universities will be able to create new jobs and expand their markets," added Davey.
The company, selected via a competition, will develop two new technologies in collaboration with varsities of Edinburgh and Leeds to reduce the cost associated with carbon capture.
The collaboration with Edinburgh will study a new concept for the design and construction of cheaper absorber columns while the second effort will involve both varsities and look into carbon dioxide separation and compression technologies.
