The Québec government has signed a long-term agreement with the native Attikamek community of Wemotaci which allows it to build two new hydroelectric projects in the Haute-St-Maurice region, Canada.

The US$549M dams will be built at Chute-Allard and Rapides-des-Coeurs on the Saint-Maurice river, and are expected to start producing 138MW in 2008.

Construction work on the dams should generate 600 jobs, but the projects have come under attack by pressure group Foundation Rivéres which does not see the project as environmentally friendly.
