Production halt at Isiklar mine comes after operations were shut down at Soma’s Eynez and Atabacasi coal fields.

Energy Minister Taner Yildiz was quoted by Reuters as saying, "Labour inspectors have halted production in the other two mines. What will be done in the meantime is to remedy the deficiencies."

"Whenever they fix the deficiencies, the inspections will be carried out again. If seen appropriate, it could be reopened," he added.

Yildiz said: "Over the past three years, the Labour Ministry has shut down around 130 mines.

Yildiz added that the ministry has closed down more than 114 coal mines as they were found to be not complying with worker health and safety standards.

Earlier this week, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security launched investigation into two inspectors who approved the last inspection of Soma’s underground coal mine in Manisa province.
