The Turkish government is expected to transfer all of the country's hydroelectric power plants to the private sector under a privatisation programme.

No timetable for the process has been announced although 16 large hydro plants with a combined capacity of around 2,000 MW were transferred to privatisation body OIB last year. Turkey has 135 hydro plants with a total installed capacity of 12,631 MW including the 2,400 MW Ataturk and 1,330MW Keban units.

Major facilities are not expected to be entirely privatised under the programme but those assets transferred to OIB are due to be sold or leased to the private sector.
