The government of Ontario has endorsed a tunnelling plan that will increase energy generation at the Sir Adam Beck generating station.

Ontario Power Generation, the operator of the facility, is now seeking requests for proposals for the construction of the 10.5km Niagara tunnel project, which will divert and carry water from above Niagara Falls to the power station at Queenston Heights. The successful bidder will have to construct the tunnel as a turnkey project.

Work could begin next year and be completed by 2009, when the additional water delivered will equate to increased generation in the region of 1.6TWh.
