The company said that the restored facility was expanded by 210,000 metric tons per year. The unit was delivered on schedule and on budget. Up to 1,600 people a day were involved in the construction of the new unit, a process that took over a year-and-a-half.
Project capital expenditure amounted to E320 million, including E20 million to adapt the site infrastructure, and improve safety and environmental standards, said Total Petrochemicals.
According to the company, the project is in line with its strategy of adapting industrial facilities to market trends. Total works on its petrochemicals activities on integrated hubs in Europe and the United States and develops ethane-based growth projects in Qatar and Algeria. The company said that Styrene is manufactured from benzene and ethylene. It is a major chemical intermediate that is used to produce a wide array of plastics, chiefly polystyrene.
Francois Cornelis, vice chairman of Total’s executive committee and president of the chemicals branch, said: “We are now ready to face the coming years with competitiveness in a challenging market.”
