The contract with Sichuan Minjiang Port & Shipping & Electricity Power Development will see Toshiba Hydro Power (Hangzhou) deliver five 55.6MW bulb hydro turbines and associated generating equipment for the project, which will bne built in the Min River basin.
Toshiba expects to start delivering equipment in February 2017 and the plant is anticipated to begin operations by November, 2020.
Currently, the Chinese government is focused on meeting ever-increasing demand for electricity through environmentally friendly and low-cost renewable energy.
The country wants to increase its dependence on hydroelectric power generation to 380GW by 2020 from 319GW in 2015.
Toshiba's Energy Systems & Solutions Company vice president of the thermal & hydro power systems & services divTakao Konishi said: “Demand for renewable energy is growing fast in China, and Toshiba is pleased to help increase capacity.
"We established THPC in 2005 and since then it has installed 87 hydro turbines and hydro pump turbines and 101 generators. This new order builds on THPC’s delivery record in China and its advantages in technology and production quality.”
Toshiba delivered its first Japanese-made hydroelectric generator in 1894, which produced 60kW.
The company currently produces a range of hydroelectric generators to meet various flow rates, heads of rivers and generation capabilities.
