Capable of generating power using hydrogen as a fuel, the autonomous energy supply system features a photovoltaic power generation system with batteries for storing output power.

The system also integrates a hydrogen-producing water electrolysis unit, hydrogen storage alloy tank that achieves much improved high-density storage, and a hydrogen fuel cell unit.

Electricity generated from the photovoltaic installations is used to power the 12 rooms in the Henn na Hotel’s Phase 2, and additional power is used to electrolyze water and produce hydrogen.

The system will then store the hydrogen in tanks for use in fuel cells that produce electricity and hot water.

In 2015, Toshiba commenced operations at the H2One independent energy supply system to validate the effectiveness of a hydrogen-based emergency electric power and hot-water supply system and a hydrogen energy management system in normal operating circumstances at both the Kawasaki sites.

The energy supply system was installed by Kawasaki City and Toshiba at the Kawasaki Marien public facility and Higashi-Ogishima-Naka Park in the Kawasaki Port area.

Additional features of the H2One system include energy management system to contribute during peak shift, reducing demand for mains power.

Capable of being transported to disaster-hit areas on trailers, the H2One is designed to store enough hydrogen to supply electricity and hot water for 300 people for about one week.
