Torrent Power has signed an agreement with an unnamed developer to build nearly 200MW of onshore wind in the Indian state of Gujarat.

The company has entered into a contract with a wind turbine generator manufacturing group on three wind farms totaling 197.4MW.

The deal covers unnamed projects in the Kutch and Bhavnagar districts in Gujarat.

All three wind farms are expected to be commissioned by March 2017, and they will have off take agreements for Renewable Power Purchase Obligations in place.

Torrent Power entered into renewable energy generation in 2012 and commissioned a 49.6MW wind power project in Jamnagar district in Gujarat.

The company is also working on 136.8MW of wind in the Rajkot and Surendrangar districts, also in Gujarat.

Torrent Power has also commissioned a 51MW solar power plant at Charanka Solar Park in Gujarat in 2015.

Torrent Power has a turnover of about INR16,000 crore ($240m). The company’s current installed capacity is 3202MW.

It distributes about 14 billion units of power to more than 2.95 million consumers annually in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Bhiwandi and Agra.

Distribution franchise business is one area which Torrent Power has been undertaking as part of its expansion plans.

Torrent Power entered into India’s first distribution franchisee agreement with Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited for Bhiwandi Circle in December 2006.

The company also secured the distribution franchise for Agra and Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh and has already started distribution operations in Agra.
